Do custom flue systems affect warranty?

Almost every building will have a chimney and flue system in place, whether a residential home or a commercial building. However, designing and installing flue systems aren’t always one-size-fits-all approach – some flue systems require more detailed planning and work, whilst others are more straight forward. In this article, Flue Liner Solutions answer the question: do custom flue systems affect warranty?

What is a custom flue system?

A custom flue system is essentially a flue system (ductpipe or chimney) that deviates from a ‘standard’ straight, upward system. Custom flue systems are often needed for older buildings, when re-routing around other pipework or extensions. A custom flue system in this respect, providing it’s clearly outlined to insurers and warranty providers, should be covered as within a warranty policy as usual.

A flue which has been repaired can also be considered ‘custom’ too, as the original flue is no longer in its original state and as such will now be considered a custom system… Warranty documents and insurers will also see it as such and therefore the original warranty will likely to be rendered invalid, as the warranty is for the original flue and will not include or consider remedial work as part of the original warranty.

Should I repair or replace a Flue?

Our advice, based on over 25 years’ experience, is to replace where possible and only consider repairs as a last resort.

Not only does a new flue ensure that you’ll receive a new, fully valid warranty, it also ensures that your new system is fully functioning and of the highest standard – which will save time and money on further remedial work in the future.

The FuranFlex flue lining we use is the most advanced flue lining solution on the market and is incredibly versatile and can be installed in chimneys of any shape or size, with a 25-year guarantee.

In summary, do custom flue systems affect warranty? If a flue has a custom design and build, no, it shouldn’t affect your warranty (as the warranty will be for the system). If the flue has been modified in any way, therefore becoming a custom system, then yes, it’s likely your original flue warranty will be affected.
